How to Read Your BaZi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your BaZi chart is a cosmic blueprint. While professional interpretation requires years of study, understanding the basics is empowering.
Step 1: Understand the Four Pillars
A BaZi chart consists of four pillars, each representing a component of your birth data:
- Year Pillar - Ancestral karma and social environment
- Month Pillar - Parents, career path, early influences
- Day Pillar - Your core self, spouse, inner nature (most important)
- Hour Pillar - Children, dreams, later life
Each pillar contains two characters: a Heavenly Stem (top) and an Earthly Branch (bottom).
Step 2: Identify Your Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents you. There are 10 Day Masters, each corresponding to one of the Five Elements:
- Wood (Jia/Yi) - Growth, flexibility, ambition
- Fire (Bing/Ding) - Passion, visibility, warmth
- Earth (Wu/Ji) - Stability, nurturing, trust
- Metal (Geng/Xin) - Justice, structure, determination
- Water (Ren/Gui) - Wisdom, adaptability, depth
Step 3: Count Your Elements
Go through all eight characters and tally each element. Strong Day Master (3+ of your element) can handle more of the same. Weak Day Master (1-2) needs support from favorable elements.
Step 4: Find Your Favorable Elements
- Too hot (excess Fire) = Water and Metal favorable
- Too cold (excess Water) = Fire and Wood favorable
- Too rigid (excess Metal) = Water and Fire favorable
- Too unstable (excess Wood) = Metal and Earth favorable
Step 5: The 10 Gods (Shi Shen)
- Resource - Education, mother, support
- Peer - Siblings, competitors, willpower
- Output - Creativity, children, expression
- Wealth - Income, practical results
- Power - Career, authority, discipline
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't read columns independently - BaZi is about relationships between elements
- Don't ignore hidden stems in the branches
- Don't equate weak with bad - Weak Day Masters often achieve great things
